Nutritionists say we all should eat two or three servings of fish every week in addition to other sources of protein such as meats, eggs and nuts for a balanced diet. We should also eat plenty of the other foods pictured on the Food Guide Pyramid, including breads, cereals, vegetables, fruit, dairy and fat, but eating a balanced diet is just part of the picture. For maximum health benefits Tommy Trout recommends the following list of tips.

  1. Balance your diet with a variety of foods. Did you know that eating too much of one type of food can be unhealthy? Our bodies need a variety of nutrients like protein, carbohydrates, fat and many different vitamins and minerals from a variety of foods to stay healthy. Choose different food groups from the Food Guide Pyramid and be brave about trying new foods that might taste great and be good for you.
  2. Eat plenty of fish. Most experts recommend 2–3 servings of fish per week. For maximum health benefits eat fish that have high levels of Omega-3 Fatty Acids such as Rainbow Trout and Salmon.
  3. Exercise every day. Fit physical activities into your day. There are lots of fun ways to do this, such as riding your bike or walking to a friend's house or walking up stairs instead of taking an elevator. Even on rainy days there are lots of fun physical activities you can do, like jumping rope indoors, using an exercise video, dancing, and gymnastics. Try to balance the time you spend in front of the TV or computer with equal time in physical activity.
  4. Eat a good breakfast. After a long night without food, your body needs some fuel. A good breakfast can help you do better in school because it will help you concentrate on your work, instead of your grumbling stomach.
  5. Drink plenty of water. Before, during and after exercise our bodies need water to replace the water lost by sweating. Every cell in our bodies must have water to stay alive. Water carries nutrients throughout our bodies. It keeps our body temperature just where it should be at 98.6° F, helps eliminate waste and is important for many of the chemical reactions our bodies produce all day long. Eight glasses of water a day and plenty of fresh fruit will keep our bodies hydrated, which means "well-watered."
